In this episode of Greeley Business Beat, we head into the heart of Greeley to explore one of the city’s most innovative craft breweries with Miranda Carbaugh of Wiley Roots Brewing Company. What started as a homebrewing hobby on a stovetop has grown into a nationally recognized brewery known for its bold experimentation, strong community ties and unmistakable personality.

Miranda shares how Wiley Roots evolved from basement batches and barn-built systems into a thriving business, all while staying grounded in family history and local roots. From award-winning beers to creative events and even a resident feline celebrity, Wiley Roots is more than just a place to grab a drink. It’s an experience that keeps people coming back.

Key Highlights:

  • [00:02:23] From Stovetop to Startup
What began as Kyle Carbaugh’s curiosity about homebrewing quickly turned into a full-fledged passion project. Brewing moved from the kitchen to the basement to a horse barn, with friends and family serving as early taste testers. By 2009, the idea for a business was born, but launching it would require patience, sacrifice and years of self-funding in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

  • [00:03:32] Building It from the Ground Up
Unable to secure financing, Miranda and Kyle lived on one income for five years while saving and constructing the brewery themselves. When Wiley Roots opened in 2013, Miranda ran the operation solo at first, working shifts, managing the business, and laying the foundation for growth while Kyle continued working full-time.

  • [00:10:38] Brewing Beyond the Basics
While Wiley Roots started with traditional styles, it quickly evolved into a hub for experimentation. From barrel-aged sours to fruit-packed “slushy” beers, the brewery built a reputation for pushing boundaries and staying ahead of trends while still serving its local audience.

  • [00:12:37] Innovation During Uncertain Times
When COVID changed the industry, Wiley Roots adapted fast, launching a drive-through experience and doubling down on creative offerings like its wildly popular Fruit Lady series. The result was national attention and a loyal following that extended far beyond Greeley.

  • [00:18:31] Why Greeley?
After years of searching for the right location, the answer turned out to be right where it all began. With deep family roots in Weld County, choosing Greeley was not just practical. It was personal.

  • [00:19:39] More than Just Beer
Today, Wiley Roots is as much about community as it is about craft. From yoga classes and book clubs to markets and live events, the brewery creates experiences that go beyond what is in the glass, giving people a reason to gather, connect, and stay awhile.
