In this episode of Greeley Business Beat, we visit The Ginger Cat, a cozy yarn shop and creative gathering place tucked inside Showcase Art Center in downtown Greeley. Owners Lesli Anderson and Ilona Cathalan share how a lifelong dream, a ginger kitten and a passion for fiber arts came together to create one of Greeley's most welcoming creative communities.

More than just a yarn store, The Ginger Cat is a place where beginners and experienced makers alike can learn new skills, find unique supplies and build lasting friendships. Through affordable classes, local products and an open-door philosophy, Lesli and Ilona have created a space where creativity and community go hand in hand.

Key Highlights:

[00:02:03] A Dream Years in the Making

Lesli dreamed of owning a yarn shop since she was 12 years old after discovering a small craft store in her hometown. Decades later, a conversation with Ilona inspired them to turn that lifelong dream into reality, opening The Ginger Cat just six months later.

[00:03:14] How The Ginger Cat Got Its Name

The business takes its name from Ginger, the family's orange tabby kitten. What started as a joking suggestion from Lesli's brother quickly became the perfect fit for their colorful, creative business.

[00:04:31] Finding the Perfect Home in Greeley

After searching for affordable storefronts, Lesli and Ilona partnered with Showcase Art Center to transform an unused basement room into their yarn shop. Their location has become a hidden gem where visitors can discover both creativity and community.

[00:06:28] Building Community One Stitch at a Time

While yarn fills the shelves, people are the true focus of The Ginger Cat. The shop offers in-person classes, free crafting space and a welcoming atmosphere where visitors can learn, connect and simply enjoy spending time together.

[00:08:02] Making Fiber Arts Accessible

The Ginger Cat keeps creativity affordable through its bargain yarn bins, donated supplies and beginner-friendly lesson packages that include tools and materials. Their goal is to make it easy for anyone to explore knitting or crochet without a large upfront investment.

[00:09:31] Supporting Local Makers

Alongside popular yarn brands, the shop features locally produced alpaca fiber from Northern Colorado, including hand-spun yarn that can't be found anywhere else. Supporting local artisans is an important part of the shop's mission.

[00:10:27] Growing One Customer at a Time

Starting without loans and funding the business entirely out of pocket, Lesli and Ilona have steadily grown each year thanks to loyal customers and word-of-mouth support throughout the Greeley community.

[00:11:06] A Community That Helped Keep the Doors Open

One of their earliest customers became one of their biggest supporters by prepaying for knitting lessons during the shop's first summer, helping The Ginger Cat stay open during its earliest days. That spirit of generosity continues to define the community they've built.

[00:14:54] Every Handmade Piece Has a Story

Perfection isn't the goal in fiber arts. Ilona explains that nearly every handmade project includes at least one small mistake, and that's part of what makes handcrafted creations unique, personal and full of character.

[00:16:02] Everyone Is Welcome

For anyone curious about learning to knit or crochet, Lesli's advice is simple: just come in. Whether you're picking up needles for the first time or returning to a longtime hobby, The Ginger Cat offers a friendly place to learn, create and connect.
