Cinnamon rolls and chili! Who came up with that?

Looking at the history, it’s not entirely clear who first paired the two, but Indiana can claim the earliest printed reference, dating back to 1905. And Greeley schools were the first to introduce chili and cinnamon rolls on their lunch menus, helping cement the combo as a local classic.

Still, this is one combination that would have never crossed my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I love cinnamon rolls and chili separately. Together? I was a skeptic.

After hearing my colleagues rave about chili and cinnamon rolls as their go-to comfort food again and again, I finally had to give it a try. And honestly, I loved it. So, here’s a little fun history behind this unexpected duo, plus a few local spots in Greeley where you can try it for yourself and decide whether it’s delicious or just delightfully strange.

An article from Flatwater Free Press dives into the history of the two key spices, cinnamon and chili, tracing their origins and how this pairing found its way into the Midwest. Whatever its origins, chili and cinnamon rolls have an enduring place on plates in Colorado. Now on to where you can try it right here in town.

Our top recommendation is The Tavern at St. Michael’s Square. Chef Chad features this comforting combination every Tuesday, starting early in the morning to make sure the chili and cinnamon rolls are just right. It’s cozy, nostalgic and about as authentic as it gets.

Another great option is Meeker’s: A Colorado Kitchen & Bar. With a refreshed menu and newer staff, this Midwestern staple makes an appearance every day of the week. If you’re heading downtown for a show at the Union Colony Civic Center, this is an easy and delicious stop to add to your plans.

Lastly, Country Inn Restaurant also offers chili and cinnamon rolls. Both are available as sides, so you’ll need to order them separately. That said, it’s a great entry point if you’re new to the combo. You can enjoy your chili first and save the cinnamon roll for dessert.

This pairing may not be for everyone, but it’s one of those Greeley traditions worth trying at least once. After all, as they say, don’t knock it ’til you try it. And who knows, you might just become a believer, too.
