Are you looking for a place with a fun photo op in Greeley? Bring your friends and family to Sanborn Park to pose and snap pictures with the brand new My Greeley photo frame.
The new frame is located at Sanborn Park, 2031 28th Avenue in Greeley. The best point of access is the Sanborn parking lot off 20th Street, east of 35th Avenue. The four-foot by five-foot wide frame can accommodate group photos or just one person in a single selfie. Be sure to watch the My Greeley campaign grow and mature throughout the year as we will be kicking off the campaign with a fresh perspective that will offer our residents to engage in the campaign in various different ways.
Sanborn Park is a place for fun as it has a playground, a volleyball court, and an area for football or soccer. It is also a place for gathering with friends and family with a large shelter (that can be reserved), picnic tables, and barbeque grills. There is lots to see in the park, including several pieces of public art and wildlife. Most notably, Sanborn is home to Westlake, the pond in the center of the park, and the new photo frame provides a stunning view of it. Westlake also provides the community with opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating.
Another thing that makes the Sandborn Park area so inviting and enjoyable is its proximity to local businesses in the Westlake shopping center, where you can pick up coffee, juice, ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, and more and walk these tasty treats over to the park to enjoy. In addition, several restaurants in the area offer outside dining, and some patios have views of the park.
The City of Greeley offers several events at Sanborn Park and other local parks. The first Saturday in June, the annual Fishing Derby takes place at Sanborn. A free event, Neighborhood Nights gives you the perfect excuse to head out to one of our beautiful community parks, stake out a patch of grass with lawn chairs or blankets, and enjoy a wonderful movie shot on an inflatable screen. On August 6, the movie Labyrinth will be playing at Sanborn Park.
Sanborn Park and Westlake also have a rich history. Originally called Miami or Houston Reservoir was referred to as Sanborn Lakes by 1918, took on the name West Greeley Lake around 1950, and is now known as Westlake.
In 1893, Burton Sanborn saw this low spot in the landscape as an opportunity to impound seepage and irrigation wastewater for further use. He sought to make Greeley the “garden spot of the West” by storing water from the Poudre River in reservoirs for later distribution to farmers. Sanborn was a Trustee of the Union Colony, served on City Council, and was instrumental in securing the donation of a 40-acre tract of land and $15,000 for the establishment of the State Normal School, now known as the University of Northern Colorado.
Several City of Greeley departments and divisions worked together to make this photo frame project happen, including Communication and Engagement, Parks Division, Public Works Streets, Planning Division, and Fast Signs. Thanks to all the city staff who made this project possible.
